Beyond Caporetto

Tour Code: S104

Follow the end of the First World War on the Italian Front

Defeat for the Italian army at Caporetto caused a massive retreat that only stopped at the Piave River, just north of Venice. It also triggered the sending of both French and British troops to help prop up the Italian Front. This tour examines the end of the war in this diverse and very different theatre.

Itinerary

Day 1: We arrive in Verona and there is free time to explore the home of Romeo and Juliet and to enjoy your first glass of Italian wine.

Day 2: In the morning you will receive a dramatic introduction to alpine warfare with a hike along the Strada della 52 Gallerie. Built in 1917, this military road includes 52 tunnels hewn out of the rock. In the afternoon, we visit sites in the Asiago area, including cemeteries and a preserved British trench. Then it’s off to Asiago itself for dinner.

Day 3: Today we pay a visit to the Monte Grappa sector. We will hike our way into an Italian trench system and our stops also include a visit to the national Monumento ai Caduti del Monte Grappa. We will also follow in the footsteps of a young Rommel, and there is even time for a tasting session at the base of a family producer of Prosecco, for which the region is famous.

Day 4: Today we concentrate on the end of the war on the Italian Front. We’ll be considering events along the River Piave, and the Battle of the Solstice. We’ll look at the tragic Boys of ’99 thrown into battle at the last, as well as Italian, British and French actions.

Day 5: You’ll have a time to explore the city of Treviso and relax over lunch before we head to the airport for our flight home. From Venice.

Ask us about the possibility of adding on a couple of days in Venice to explore before coming home.

Alex is keen to get as many people as possible off the Western Front and experiencing the wider First World War. She loves this tour because it all takes place outdoors and it shows just what a multi-national theatre of war the Italian Front became.
