ROADS, BRIDGES, RAILWAYS...

LOGISTICS, LOGISTICS, LOGISTICS

As a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Thailand, you'll expect to be travelling far and wide to see locations connected to the Second World War. Indeed, 'logistics' were the only answer when Thailand became involved in this conflict. There's no better example of the strength of humanity, than the construction of the Thai-Burma-Railway, a focal point for this 9-day trip.

We'll visit places you've heard of, such as the Bridge over the River Kwai, and Hellfire Pass of course, but we'll also go a little off the beaten track. We'll take you to locations that aren't always accessible to tourists. And as a once-in-a-lifetime trip, you'll also have the option to extend your stay.

DEATH RAILWAY & HELLFIRE PASS

You'll need to acclimatise. That's why we've designed this tour with plenty of time and some lighter opportunities to get to know the country, as we learn about its conflict history - (this is a battlefield tour and history trip that your long-suffering other half will enjoy!)

Departing from Bangkok Noi Station for example, once an important logistics station for the Japanese, we drive to Kanchanaburi and the Bridge over the River Kwai - so we'll break the journey at an elephant reserve.

We'll also travel on the Death Railway Train itself, passing over the original wooden viaduct constructed by Allied POWs. We'll visit the interpretive centre at Hellfire Pass, the Thai-Burma Railway Centre, and the JEATH War Museum - all in the company of expert guides who'll share the multi-cultural insights and experiences of soldiers on all sides. After transferring to Chiang Mai, you'll visit the remains of the downed plane in Lamphun and we'll tour the Tango Squadron Museum of course, to see the wreckage of ‘Black Mac’ P-40 Tomahawk found by villagers.

To lighten the mood, we conclude with a day at City Temple and Warorot Market, before an afternoon at leisure - or another get-together to hear more about Japanese conflict. And we hope you'll join us for our evening street-food Tuk Tuk tour too ... our tours are made around you.

'Travel the road, cross the bridge, board the train - discover Thailand at war, with all the options to experience the country, your way.'

"I survived with just a bit of help and encouragement from them and a grim determination not to bloody well die in a place like that; to die like a slave in the jungle."

WHAT KIND OF TOUR... ? These were dark times, and you'll be learning about deprivation, hunger, slave labour and the POW experience. You'll need to be physically fit so that you're comfortable travelling in a hot climate - there's a little walking, we cover a wide area, and you'll see the terrain in which men fought and died, every day. But we've built in opportunities to explore the  Thais culture too; to see the sights, lighten the mood and spend time getting to know the Thai people as well.

FACILITIES ARE...? We're in Thailand, and this is a tour that takes in locations with a dark history, but there is nothing quite like a warm Thai welcome! It's important to know that European and American hotels and transport offer a different style of comfort, so 4* in Thailand can be 2* or 3* elsewhere. But this is about embracing the culture! Rest assured, air-conditioned rooms will be offered as much as possible, as will air-conditioned transport (our evening street food tour is by Tuk-Tuk!).

TIME TO RELAX... ? Most certainly. We're travelling long distances, so we've designed this tour to give you time to relax and explore the culture. Visits to City Temple, for example, and Wararot Market are part of our itinerary. This is everything you'd expect from a once-in-a-lifetime journey to visit key locations of the Second World War, in Thailand.

WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED... ? We don't include international travel. Our guests tell us they much prefer flexibility around meal choices on long haul trips like this, so we leave all meals up to you - with the exception of our welcome dinner, when we hope you'll join us and get to know your fellow guests. We don't include tips for Thai guides who we meet at various locations, we do leave that to your discretion.
